European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs)), Global Health Insurance Cards (GHICs) and Provisional Replacement Certificates (PRCs) issued by the UK institution can also continue to be provisionally used in the previous format for temporary stays in Germany from 1 January 2021.
For cross-border sickness benefits, the previous provisions generally continue to apply. However, long-term care benefits are not covered for stays that begin after 31 December 2020.
For you, this means that as a basic rule it is no longer possible to receive long-term care benefits for stays in Germany.
- Example: You are insured in the UK and are visiting Germany as a tourist from 20 August 2020 to 15 September 2021.
- Result: You can also continue to receive medically necessary benefits in kind until the end of your stay with the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)), Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC) issued by the competent UK institution.
